Yes, we are your dentist. But we aren’t totally anti-candy. We understand this is a time of year when you and your family want to enjoy some special treats. Still, you should choose the right candy for your smile.
While some candy is relatively harmless to your teeth, other treats can do a real number on your smile. As this short video notes, sticky candies like Airheads, taffy, and gummies have no nutritional value. As if that’s not bad enough, they also cling to your teeth – which makes you more prone to cavities. In addition to sticky candies, you should pass on any candies labeled “sour.” With very high concentrations of sugar and acid, these sour treats are especially hard on your tooth enamel.
Chocolate is a better choice all around. It has some nutritional value. And since it melts quickly in your mouth, it washes away from your teeth before causing damage. Sugar-free gum is another good option – especially if it contains xylitol, a natural cavity-fighter.
Making the right dietary choices – including limiting sugary snacks – is an important part of caring for your smile. Of course, daily brushing and flossing are essential. And visit our office every six months for a cleaning and exam.
